Student Spring Break Trip

For Spring Break 2011 the Student Ministry of Westwood will partner with Oak Park Baptist Church, in Jeffersonville, IN, in efforts to reach the community with the love of Jesus Christ. We will do this through canvassing area neighborhoods, hosting community block parties, various community service projects, and other random acts of kindness. We will also have nightly worship and Bible study, one free day in downtown Louisville, KY, and tons of opportunities to hang out and connect with each other. Don't miss out, it's going to be a blast, so sign up and help us Advance The Kingdom of God!

Advance: The Kingdom trip will be March 12-18 and is open for all middle and high school students. The cost of the trip is $200/person (for all MS/HS students that have completed the Advance: Core Groups Program) or $250/person (for all MS/HS students that did not complete and/or did not participate in the Advance: Core Groups Program). Cost includes: transportation, lodging, food and free day (students will need extra $ for fast food on travel days, as well as any spending $.)

Advance: Core Groups

Advance: Core Groups this spring will be amazing! This program will challenge middle school students to advance in their walk with Christ through Bible reading, scripture memorization, and reaching out to and praying for their friends. Also, high school students will receive an opportunity to advance in their walk with Christ through learning from different leaders in our church, and investing in the lives of middles school students with the assistance of our adult leadership team. All students, middle school and high school, that complete the expectations of Advance: Core Groups will be able to attend our Advance: The Kingdom Spring Break trip for a reduced price.

Advance: Core Groups is a 6-week Sunday night program beginning January 23 and ending on March 6 (no meeting on Feb. 6). We will meet at the Alabaster Campus in the Small Groups Building.

All high school students arrive at 4:00pm
All middle school studnets arrive at 4:30pm
Advance: Core Groups will end at 6:00pm

The cost is $10/student (cost covers dinner each Sunday night). Registration ends Sunday, January 23rd. * All students must purchase a Student Word of Life Quiet Time book by January 16th. The books are $20 and available in The Source and at AREA 51. (If you have already purchase a book back in August you will not need another one.)

This summer we will have the privilege of serving in remote villages, surrounding Guatemala City where we will us a variety of methods (sports, crafts, school supplies, VBS, etc) to gather people around the Word, share the Gospel, give them a Bible in their language, and serve their needs. At the end of the week we will share with them the importance of Acts 2:42 which are New Testament instructions on what new believers are to devote themselves to in their new walk with Christ. Our locals on the ground will work with these new believers all year long to help disciple them as a new church.

Ministry Projects will be as follows:

Evangelism-everyone will be trained to present a simple presentation of the Gospel.

Orphanage-we will also plan on visiting a local orphanage where we will interact with and play with the children.

Humanitarian Aid-we will work with our ministry partner, Feed the Children, to help feed hundreds of starving kids in these impoverished villages and the city dump.

Villages-we will be serving in Palencia and Bejucailto.

It's time to make a difference here and around the world!

If you are a high school or college student then listen up! Did you know that over 850 million children around the world are with out food? How about the fact that every day 26,000 children die because of hunger, disease, and poverty, and of those, 14,000 die as a result of malnutrition? Shocking huh? We believe that God is calling the students of Westwood to do something about this.

As a result, this November we are partnering with World Vision to make a difference. World Vision is a Christ-based organization that seeks to provide food and the gospel of Jesus Christ to the hungry around the world. So, here's what we are going to do. On November 12-13th, we are doing a 30 hour famine. During this famine, you will be challenged to give up food for 30 hours (from after breakfast Friday morning till dinner Saturday evening), and $30 dollars of your hard-earned money. The best part is, your $30 will provide a kid in a developing country food for 30 days and a chance to hear about Jesus Christ!

In addition to the 30 hours of fasting from food, we will have three different worship services at AREA 51 over the course of the weekend. Micah Millican will be teaching and worship will be led by Shawn & Katie Sandlin. Friday night will be spent at a host home with your friends for Bible study and fellowship time, and on Saturday morning you'll step out of your comfort zone and serve people in our community through various projects and random acts of kindness. It's time to be the hands and feet of Jesus!

Disciple Now is a weekend for your student to connect with their friends and adult leaders of our student ministry as well as an opportunity to grow deeper in their personal walk with Christ. On Saturday your student will assist our Calera Campus in reaching out to the community then we will return to AREA 51 for an afternoon of bowling and games. T2 Summer Discipleship Program

T2 will meet for six consecutive Thursdays at AREA 51 beginning on June 17th from 8:30am-12:30pm and is for those students who have completed 6th-8th grades. Wednesday's are fun at AREA 51! There is ping pong, basketball, foose ball, video games, a coffee shop with milkshakes (only $1) not to mention the awesome time of worship with the student praise band and Micah's message.

The shuttle will begin also on Wednesday, August 12th and will leave the main campus at 6:05pm and will return after the Middle School service. High School Core Group Returns August 23rd!

High School Core Groups will be doing a book study, Going Public with Your Faith, by William Carr Peel, TH.M. and Walt Larimore, M.D. This study will help you to become a spiritual influence at work and school. Core Groups will start on Sunday, August 23rd, 6:00pm-8:00pm. The girls will meet at the Enloe's home and the boys at the Horton's. The cost of the book and food will be $15. We will have available for purchase a devotional book that will go along with our Sunday morning lessons in LIFE Groups. We would like to encourage every student to purchase this book to help them have a better understanding of what they are learning. "REVERB-Our Lives Echo in the World" will help answer the questions, what God's mission is for you and what it means to be a part of it? Each chapter of the book corresponds with a specific 6-week course of Student Life Bible study's REVERB study. These chapters are designed for you to work through at your own pace. From time to time your teacher might encourage you to work on specific activities. But for the most part, this book is designed for you to work through on your own.

Summer Camp Reports

Camp was a BLAST!!!! On June 12th sixteen of our middle schoool students hopped on the bus immediately after VBS and headed to Shocco Springs Conference Center in Talladega, AL. The camp speaker was Adam Robinson who talked to the students about FLIPPING their lives around to live for Jesus.

We also had an awesome time of worship led by Chris Orr. There was also time for small groups Bible study time and just having quite time by yourself. Fun was had by all in spite of the rain storms!

On June 19th, thirty-six high school students boarded busses in route to beautiful Gatlinburg, TN. Louie Giglio was the camp speaker and preached on the meaning of true worship and FLIPPING the way you worship and live your lives for Jesus. The praise and worship was led by Steve Fee and you could really feel the presence of God in the convention center that week. The students had the pleasure of having Micah Millican, our new Student Pastor, at camp with them a couple of days. We had groups that played ultimate frisbee, tag football, waded in the river at the park and a group that even went hiking in the Smokey Mountains. Thanks to all the adults that went to make this weekend one to remember.

Amazing Race Event for Seniors!

We had 9 seniors that participated in The Amazing Race Event on May 9th the race got off to a fast start .....

with Courtney W. winning the race and receiving a $100 visa gift card to help with college expenses. Thank you Mrs. Di for cooking a wonderful meal.

Senior Recognition was on Sunday, May 17th and we had 40 seniors that participated and were recognized in the 11:00 am service.

Spring Break with World Changers

Just because we didn't go to Mexico didn't mean that we could not do mission work. We just kept it close to home. Around 30 students got together to work with World Changers, Monday -Thursday, during Spring break to work on Mr. Hatter's home. We had to scrape off the old paint in the rain on Monday but the good Lord gave us clear weather and sunshine the rest of the week while we painted, made minor repairs and planted flowers. On January 23-25 there were 57 high students students that attended Disciple Now. We met at AREA 51 on Friday night and traveled to Church at Brookhills for Student Life Tour. The theme was "Live Love" based off of John 13:35. JESUS SAID THEY WOULD KNOW US BY OUR LOVE. BUT DO THEY?

The speaker was Stuart Hall and the worship leader was Kristian Stanfill. After a late night at the host homes on Friday night students returned to Church at Brookhills for session 2 and had a afternoon off for free time. Everyone had an awesome time. Saturday night the students returned to AREA 51 for a concert by Joey Seales and some of Mrs. Di's fantastic cooking. Be watching for details for Student Life Summer Camp!!!

The last project of 2008 consisted of assisting the Salvation Army with bell ringing at the Wal-Mart in Alabaster. This project was a lot of fun (once we got used to talking to people). The group consisted of Courtney W, Dianna T., Josh P., Sidney M., Andrew W., and recent youth members Liz H., and Jordan M., and former youth Kenneth S., We laughed, cut up, and rang the bells for over five hours and collected a total of $340.04 for the Salvation Army (which averages to about $65 per hour in donations). Several shoppers commented on the enthusiasm of the group and how special it was to hear "Merry Christmas" from someone. As we finished the day it was interesting to note that three of the four people who where left also worked on the very first project on January 1st. Congratulations on a job well done.

Big Honkin' Christmas Party-Project #52

Congratulations on Project #52! We had over 200 students show up for our end of the year Christmas Blowout and Project #52. The praise band was all deck out in white dress shirts and ties and played Christmas songs while the students enjoy pizza, cupcakes with red and green icing, chex mix and sodas. After the music Jason brought a fantastic Christmas message for all to think about over the Christmas break. Even though Project 51 is over we still have a couple of more service projects that will be done over the Christmas Break, from ringing the Salvation Army bells to raking leaves.

Don't forget that there will be NO LIFE Groups on Sunday, December 28. The student ministry would like to wish you a safe and blessed Christmas. The students collected $556.10 worth of gift cards and money that will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for the family we adopted.

PROJECT # 51

Wow, 51 Service Projects. When this idea was first discussed, I remember people saying, it's crazy, but I love it! What an awesome way for our students to experience God's blessings by serving others. One of the goals of this project was for our students to make an impact in the community and that has been accomplished in so many ways. From regular visits to the Kids First Awareness Center, helping out with the Hispanic Church, packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, painting, yard work and cleaning house for some senior adults, cooking and feeding people and even face painting these all have helped the people of Alabaster and the surrounding communities. Some provided much needed work, others provided a night free from doing their own dishes and some just provided laughter and smiles for an afternoon of fun! Whatever the purpose of the project, they all had one thing in common, they all glorified God! Another goal was to create a service mindset among the students of Westwood. So let's continue to serve others and make an impact on the community of Alabaster!

For Project 51, all the students participated in the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes project. Each class signed Christmas cards that will be sent to soldiers and their families in the United States and around the world. This was a great way to share Christ this Christmas season and bring joy to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the 8th grade girls made another wonderful trip to Kids First Awareness Center in Alabaster. This time our goal was to provide homework assistance, a Bible story and share homemade Christmas cookies.

The afternoon started out great with some shared tumbling techniques and a few stunts by the Thompson cheerleaders. All of the students had a great time showing off their skills and cheering for each other!

Next, in keeping with Mrs. Hawkins rules, we spent time doing homework and reading books together. We shared a Christmas Bible story and distributed our Christmas cookies--everyone enjoyed the cookies decorated by the hands of our 8th grade girls--they were stunning!!

As always, the fellowship was sweet and we are already counting the days until we return. Project 51 maybe finished, but our relationship with Kids First will go on. Andrew Wash has joined us too. Thanks to Andrew's genuis, we hope to bring the Westwood student drama team with us in January, 2009!!

On Sunday, November 23rd, the 11th grade guys collected books, dvds, shaving cream, deodorant, snack food along with other items and are sending them to Sergeant First Class Jemar L. Ford so he can distribute the items to his fellow troops. The class found Jemar on the website anysoldier.com and chose him because his army unit is from Ft. Rucker, Alabama! Jemar’s unit are air traffic controllers stationed in Iraq until July of 2009 and he was asking for snack food, toiletries, and entertainment stuff during their slow off-duty hours. Also, everyone in the class wrote a small letter of encouragement for Jemar to also distribute to the troops.

Project #46

We had many students help out in the Operation Christmas Child Alabaster Relay Center from November 17-23. Students helped to greet guest dropping off shoe boxes and made them feel welcome by offering them refreshments.

They also took information from guests for Operation Christmas Child's records. Once the shoe boxes were unloaded and counted students helped pack them in cartons so they could be shipped to Atlanta.

There was also a lot of waiting for people to bring shoeboxes (did you know that balloons make your hair stick up?) to the relay center. While they waited some volunteers folded up the decorated Operation Christmas Child boxes, taped cartons to prepare them for the shoeboxes and other brought their toys and gifts and packed their own shoeboxes while waiting.

Thanks to all of the students that volunteered, the relay center was able to collect 2,145 shoeboxes. Each shoebox represents one life that will be changed and one family that will learn the truth of God's love for them.

On November 15th, the 10th grade girl’s life group cooked dinner for the families at the Ronald McDonald house. The Ronald McDonald house provides families with a place to stay while their child is receiving medical care at Children’s Hospital. The girls cooked enough soup, cornbread, and dessert to feed forty people, and set up the meal for the families.

The girls who participated in this project were Katie, Courtney, Ellen Anne, Mallory, Jennifer and Mille.

On Saturday, November 22, the 10th Grade Guys LIFE Group partnered with the United Way and Hands on Birmingham to serve at the Glenwood Autism Center in Birmingham. The Glenwood Autism Center treats and supports children, adolescents, and adults who are emotionally disturbed, mentally ill, and those diagnosed with autism. The guys were put in charge of painting "chalkboards" with animal characters for the families who reside in the Glenwood facility. A magical blue paint was applied by our "Blue Man Group" consisting of Alan, Collin, and Cameron; when the blue paint dries it becomes a surface that can be used as a chalkboard. We were encouraged to "be creative" with the animal color schemes-perhaps that was taken too far with a red and green zebra, powder blue bull, a red bear, and the retro "grape ape" (kids, check out youtube for this classic cartoon). There was of course an Auburn Tiger and an Alabama Elephant too--hopefully those end up in the correct homes.

Project #45 - Project Thai Christmas

The 11:00 Middle School Girls Class sponsored "Project Thai Christmas" The group was collected 107 Hot Wheels cars, 11 small baby dolls, 10 Barbie dolls, 75 pairs of girls' panties and 40 pairs of boys' briefs to be sent over to Global Children's Awareness, the ministry of missionaries Sarah and Jason Ricketts (former WWBC members) in Chiang Rai Thailand. The Ricketts sponsor Christmas parties for Thai and Burmese children and offer shoebox-type gift to each child including toys, clothing, toiletries and candy. Our role was to collect dolls and cars along with underwear to help out. Way to go girls! Thanks for doing your part for the Kingdom.

Yeah! We are almost done! Project #44 happened Friday, October 31, working at Westwood's Fall Festival. The student's worked at the Tic Tac Toe booth. It was pretty obvious from the get go that we were going to have trouble getting 2 people at the same time to play a game of tic tac toe...but not to be discouraged Karima, Cameron, Savannah, Jonathan and Mrs. Janice made a quick plan to make it a 3 in a row game to win the neon green bracelets that said "not of this world".

We had students that worked in other areas of the fall festival too! Andrew and Stephen were setting up for some slimy experiments.

One of our students even got in to the spirit of things and dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow (aka: Ryan). Cheers to you Ryan!

There was even some of our LIFE Group leaders that dressed up; can you tell who the clown is? Fun was had by everyone! Thanks guys for participating!

Ecuador Mission Trip in Still On, Just Different!

A number of students have indicated interest so we thought we'd let you know that the mission trip to Ecuador in July is still on but has been changed slightly in light of student ministry changes. It is now a church-wide trip rather than being primarily a student trip. The trip will include soccer challenge evangelism, children’s ministry, community service, evangelism and discipleship.

For more information, please join us for an interest meeting on Sunday Nov. 16 at 12:30 in room 214. The important question is this: "Is God calling you to go?" If so, He will provide the finances. God has a way of providing the resources for what He calls us to do. At the meeting you will have some of the "how" questions answered.

The Eighth grade girls life group was invited to the Kid's First Awareness Center on Oct. 29th for a very special occasion. Video Visions of Alabaster was filming a promotional video for the center. Mrs. Cindy Hawkins, Center Director, invited us to be a part of the video. We staged games, homework and teaching time with the kids and had a great time! As always the fellowship was sweet. Thanks to Whitney, Emily, Elizabeth, Tori, Morgan, Abbey, Gene', Andrew, Matthew, Hardy and Grace for supporting this project. Mrs. Hawkins intends to use the video for promotional purposes and grant applications in the near future. Expect to see the video on U-Tube very soon!

Guess what!?! We are in single digits for the number of projects we have left in Project 51! I don't know about you, but I'm pretty stoked about that.

When we started Project 51 back in January we said, "What would happen if Westwood Student Ministries just disappeared all of a sudden?" Would our community miss anything about us? Are we serving in such a way that it is making a difference in the lives of those around us? And it became one of our goals to find a place where we could serve and share the love of Christ in Alabaster. Over the past few months we have been going to Kids First Awareness Center and it has been great! The best part is that this may be one of those opportunities for us to continue to serve even after project 51 is over. Pretty exciting! Anyways...Thursday was a lot of fun as always. Project 41 'aka' Project "Piney Woods"

The weekend of October the 11th was a busy time for many people, however some students took time out of their hectic schedules to show some local children the love of Jesus in a simple way; Facepainting! Students also shared information on the upcoming "Operation Christmas Child."
Students tirelessly worked through the day painting children’s faces at the Piney Woods festival, held at Veteran’s park. The festival is an annual event benefiting the Alabaster Library. Many children stopped by during the day, wanting many different things painted on their faces and arms. Some of the more popular designs included, Hearts, butterflys, footballs, soccer balls, baseballs, Alabama and Auburn Logos and of course Ninja-Turtles. The team included, Drake and Dean Fowler, Jonathan Prince, Mr. Bobby and Mrs. Lillian Culpepper and Myself. Experiencing all of the awesome art and culture on the 51 blog has inspired me to compose a limerick based on this weekend’s events:

The Students of Westwood don’t faint
When they are asked to facepaint
When children come by
They’ll get a heart or butterfly
And they get it with joy, not complaint.

On October 11th a group of 6 people from Westwood volunteered to be Cure/cheer leaders for the Race for the Cure. We had the amazing opportunity to witness the 15,000 people who walked, ran, and just took part in this amazing event. The people gave us a chant to say "Evey Person Everywhere I am the Cure." We helped to encourage people on there first mile to keep on going to the finish line.... here are some pictures: (check out Sydney's level of enthusiasm, it's amazing that she can still talk after how much cheering she did!)

On October 5th, 2008, from 0800 hours until 1300 hours, many 8th grade young men changed the lives, or at least the mornings, of several people. We were the helpers, or the phrase i coined, "blood buddies," of several donors for the blood drive at Westwood's campus. Since it was a Sunday morning, as you can imagine, we had many if not all of our regular life group attending guys. There were more than enough guys there to help out. And for that I am well-pleased and very thankful. As far as i know, there was only one complaint about my group and it wasnt even a big deal...something about one of my guys talking to the "blood bus" workers too much which i though couldnt possibly be true... *wink* They take after their main man DJ Cabes, so they just like to communicate their points of emphasis. But in all seriousness folks, we had a good time serving the blood donors and passing out refreshments. It was also a great day in the Lord's house. Thank you for all the people who donated, even though i was cowering in a corner hiding from the blood sucking needles. Speaking of which, i was wearing a shirt that said "Give blood!" Now does that make me a hypocrite? I guess it would be about the same as me being a Barista at Starbucks who doesnt drink coffee. But i digress...(i dont know how to use the word "digress" in a sentence, I hope that was grammatically correct for Anne Stansell the greatest 8th grade English teacher ever). Ok, now im rambling, i hope i got my point across. The blood drive was a huge success and i am very thankful for my life-group's participation and serving attitudes in it. We got some pictures i think, check out me and my boy Madison "mean muggin'" (as the kids are calling it) to the camera in the group shot.

Project 40 (the race participants)

Today we did project 40; it was the Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure to help raise money for Breast cancer research as well as awareness. There were about 13,000 people walking, running, and volunteering. Lacy and I (Morgan Jordan) ran the 5k in 29 min.s, but the amazing, spectacular Preston Earnest ran it in 22 min.s. Beforehand, we made plans to meet after the race at the pink fountain in the middle of the park. However, Ellen Anne got a craving for some cotton candy, and disappeared... FOR THIRTY MINUTES. We finally wandered around and found her in the cotton candy line, and she just said, "what? i wanted some cotton candy?" It was funny. So then we gathered around for a group photo, and headed back home. It was awesome to get to race in honor of people like Lori's mom who is a survivor of breast cancer. All in all it was a great day filled with lots of pink.

On Saturday, October 5th the 7th grade girls and 9th grade guys combined together to do a project. We went to the home of an elderly couple, Earl and Betty Chapel and did yard work for them. We cut limbs, trimmed bushes, pulled weeds, cleaned out flower beds, put in new mulch, and painted the front porch. This was really needed because nothing had been done all through the summer and everything was overgrown.
The Chapels are older and aren't able to do any physical labor, so they were very appreciative of our efforts. It was a pleasure to serve them in the name of Christ and meet this need for them.

For Project 38 we teamed up again with the Hipanic church at Westwood for their last Block Party Outreach Event. Our team included: Mrs. Lillian Culpepper, Tom Bird, Cameron Kemp, Andrew Wash, Karima Kemp, Savannah Thigpen, and Steven Stone. We worked with the church to do face painting, jumpropes, soccer, balloon animals, and tag. They also did puppets and had a snack. There were over 50 people there, mostly kids. Hopefully these block parties Over the past two months have helped the church to reach out to the hispanic people in Alabster.

This is a weekend for students grades 6-8 to GROW with BELIEVERS and CONNECT with GOD as they spend all weekend in host homes with a group of 8-10 other guys or girls from their grade and college-age group leader. Not only is this going to be a great weekend with Adam Robinson and Chuck Hooten but, you also get 4 hours of go-karts, laser tag, putt-putt, and skating at Trussville Playstation. On Thursday, 10/2/08, the 11th grade guys LIFE Group went to Montevallo and fed the Shelby Academy football team. We met up at AREA 51, got the food, and made our way to the school.

When we got there, we unloaded the stuff and set up all the food in the kitchen. The menu was simply fantastic: chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, sweet tea, and cookies. Soon enough, the Shelby Academy football team, coaches, and cheerleaders started to come in, anticipating the delicious meal they were about to receive. Altogether, there were about 40 to 50 people. We served the food to them, and with about 4 people left, we ran out of food. Luckily, Chris Martin had already gone to get some more.

So while Chris was out getting more food, Jeff spoke from the Scriptures to the football team. He talked essentially about how if you seek first the kingdom of God, everything else in your life that you run after will be taken care of (Matthew 6:25-33). He taught about if you live for Jesus and put him as the first priority of your life, He will take care of everything you need. After the message, Chris arrived with more chicken and mac n' cheese, so the last few people ate theirs while the football team and the cheerleaders left. Then, we just cleaned up our mess and, with the leftovers, returned to AREA 51 to eat the rest of the food. Altogether, it was a great mission project. It was really awesome to serve people who weren't old or disabled.

The 9th grade girls class (and friends) collected dry goods and canned items for the Salvation Army in early September. A lucky few who weren't at band, cheerleading, volleyball, or basketball practice met Monday, 9/22 at the Salvation Army Alabaster location to purge their food bank pantry of out of date goods. We worked a mere hour and half but were able to complete the task and learn how to make up bags of groceries for recipients. We were all shocked at the massive number of can goods that were out of date and could not be used except for distribution to the homeless.. Carolyn McGilvray, in charge of social services, showed us the ropes and explained that their clients are primarily living on disability in amount of $600 a month or less so the three times a year they can come for groceries really helps them stretch their money for medication, rent, and transportation. The girls loved it so much that they want to come back once a month. They also were introduced to some new foods like pinto and garbonzo beans (What are those?!)

On Saturday, September 20 Westwood students partnered with Iglesia Biblica Hispana de Alabaster for an outreach/ block party event.

We started things off by loading tables, chairs and other party equipment into three vehicles.
Rain threatened to cancel the event, but we remembered Phillipians 4:6 where Paul reminded us to "..not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, bring your requests to God." ...and God came through!

Emily Stansell prayed for us, asking God to make this a successful event while asking for specific attention to the rain. Once we arrived in Montevallo, rain was never a factor. We unloaded and set up all the chairs, tables, a homemade puppet theater (PVC pipe is awesome) and began blowing up and stringing balloons for a little party atmosphere. Then people just started coming. Mr. Bobby thought we would have to go door-to-door to invite people, but apparently, in this neighborhood, if there’s an outside party, you just know to show up. Over 50 people came. God came through yet again!

Students face-painted, made balloon animals, swung a jump-rope and jumped on a trampoline with the children, while the adults chatted, made contacts and shared Jesus. The Hispanic church put on a puppet show, acted out a sketch (not a skit!) and did a little bell ringing.
Pastor Jose’ Luis Leon then gave a short talk and invited everyone to come to the church next Sunday. Finally we ate some nachos and packed-up. Sorry about your nose Robin!
God really came through and we had a great time.

I also want to write a special "thank you!" shout-out post to my mom and the wonderful people at her work (Complete Foodservice Solutions). You've probably never heard them mentioned before but, they have been very generous over the past year in supporting projects and other things in the student ministry. They've donated the food for many of our trips to Kids First, the nursing home and other things like Student Life Camp. As well as let us use their super freezer to make frozen t-shirts for games!

You guys are awsome and ... thank you! We greatly appreciate your support!

Project 33

For Project 33 we went back to Kids First Awareness Center. The group included Mrs. Martha, Elizabeth and Grace Earwood, Andrew Wash, and Morgan Jordan. When we got there we tutored the kids for about 30 minutes by helping them with their homework and reading. Then we did a Bible lesson on the prophet Jeremiah and talked about how God knows us and has a plan for us. We were intentionally created to live for our creator. The best part of the day, for me, was to see how much progress these kids seem to have made since this summer. It seems like they are beginning to open up to hearing about God and learning more about Him through His word.

Afterwards we went outside and played slide tag. Brief history on this game: The first time that we went to Kids first we played slide-tag and the they thought it was the coolest thing ever. (really, it was a game that I learned at soccer practice in high school that I hadn't even planned on playing that day) Since then, just about every time we have gone I have given them a few 'options' for games to play, but EVERY single time we never make it past the slide-tag option. Now, the first thing asked when we walk in the door is "Can we play slide-tag today?" They even listen better to the lesson if we promise slide-tag afterwards.... crazy, but funny!

It has been a blast bringing God's word into the lives of these kids. Keep listening for more info on our project at Kids First next month. We would love for you to be a part of it!

This up and coming young band is filled with the same amount of promising talent as music lovers find in ALL other popular bands. Their anticipated debut album,"Bringin' Down the Rails" featuring the hit single, 'Do you have a Riddle?' is sure to please the fans with its energetic, creative, and completely honest lyrics. Their two person drum duo...ahhh the sound of clashing cymbols and rythmic tamborine skills...create a sound unlike any other. This unique sound of almost harmonious raw talent can be enjoyed by audiences of young men and maidens, old men and children. It's enough to make a random guy in the audience want to stand up and scream... "OH SNAP!"

Middle School PURSUIT

Often times parents today will say, "I can help with the math homework and baseball, but I'm gonna let someone else handle all that spiritual stuff..."

PURSUIT is designed to enable and equip parents to come alongside their middle school student and assume the role as the primary discipler in their son or daughter's life; to provide an opportunity for a relationship founded in Christ to take root.

This past Sunday we kicked off our first semester of PURSUIT and, as far as I can tell, things went great! I could not hold back my eager smiles of excitement as people began to arrive at Area 51... and they just kept coming! We were blown away by the turnout. After things got started and everyone had their share of Chex-mix, we talked about our purpose and goals behind Pursuit. Then Pastor Les Hughes talked with the parents while the middle schoolers went upstairs to hang out with me. Overall it was a great night... and we had a blast!

It's NOT too late for you and your student to join PURSUIT!! We meet THIS Sunday, September 14, at Area 51 @ 6:00.

Project 32

For Project 32 we teamed up with the Hispanic church that branches from Westwood. We helped throw a "block party" in a local mobile home community as an outreach for Hispanic families in Alabaster. It was really cool to work alongside the Hispanic church. Our part of the team included Michael Barnes (the amazing balloon shape-maker/ soccer star), Casey Barnes (photographer/ backup soccer star), Mr. Stacy (the adult presence) and Liz Hinrickson (protected the younger kids from Michael and Casey's intense soccer skills!!) Other activities included... face painting, puppet shows, handbells and eating nachos of course! It was a lot of fun and they are planning to do another one soon so keep an eye out for more upcoming projects. Here are some pictures from Saturday....

Project 31

Project 31 was AWESOME! We went back to Kids First Awareness Center to spend the afternoon with the kids. We helped them with their homework and then had a Bible lesson before we went outside to play our favorite game - slide-tag (see video). It was a blast to see the kids again and to continue to strengthen the relationships that we started this summer.

We can't wait to go back next month!

Hosanna - Andrew Wash and Jenna Morris

Wednesday night was Jenna Morris' last night to lead worship before heading off to college, and she led us in the song Hosanna. To set her up, Andrew Wash shared a short testimony about the meaning of the word "hosanna" and how the lyrics of the song have influenced him.

A huge thank you goes out to Jenna for all the hard work she has put in over the last couple of years to help lead in worship on Wednesday nights. Jenna, I know God has blessed you with a gift, and I cannot wait to see how He is going to use you as you step out into college. Thank you so much for ministering to students your own age with the talents God has given you. And, thanks for putting up with me leading the band...

Race for the Cure ... join our team!

For Project 33 and 34 we are helping out with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure - breast cancer awareness on October 11, 2008.

We are doing two projects for the two different ways we will participate:

Project 33: Run/walk in the 5k (3.1 miles) Race for the Cure. To be a part of this project you need to go to http://www.komenncalabama.org/ then click to register online. Sign up is pretty straight forward, just be sure to click "join a team" and scroll down to find us (Westwood Student Ministry). The cost is $30 dollars for adults and $20 for children and includes a t-shirt.

***Note: we have already set a goal for donations in the group so just leave that stuff blank.

Project 34: Be a Race for the Cure cureleader/ cheerleader on the sidelines of the race. There are 20 spots available. Look for the sign up sheets at Area 51 and the small groups building on Sunday mornings.

Be a part of Project 30! - School Supplies Drive

For Project 30 we are putting together a school supplies drive for the Kids First Awareness Center (see project 28.) Any school supplies that are donated will go to helping these kids have the supplies they need for this school year. Some of their needs include:

-notebook paper

-binders/ notebooks

-pens and pencils

-hand sanitizer

-glue

-colored pencils

This is a great way for us to serve our community. Bring your supplies to Area 51 or the new small groups building on Sunday mornings. The deadline is Wednesday August 6.

I kind of was a Christian only on the paper in Germany, I didn’t really accept Christ, I just was baptized as a baby, and so I kind of only was labeled as a Christian. I think in my time here I learned/ got to know Christ and I trained, not tried, to apply that on my life.

What has been one of your favorite memories in the student ministry?

You can always have trust in Christ.

Project 29 - Staffing Student Life Camp at Covenant College

Last Sunday we met at 8:00 in the morning to head to Covenant College on Lookout Mountain in Georgia. The group included Josh Harris, Michele Kaylor, Mark Hermecz, Ryan Horton, Caitlyn Enloe (my roomie!), Liz Hinrickson, Dianna Tingle, Jared Archer, Blake Strevel, Andrew Wash, Whitney Wash, Justin Thigpen, Savannah Thigpen and Jeff McKenzie.

Upon arriving we found out that we were going to have to "load-in." (this basically means setting up everything for the camp from stage stuff to the merchandise table to everything else.) This change in plans insured to me that we were going to have a great week as our students showed their willingness to be flexible and serve no matter what. It was the most fun I've ever had at a load-in!

As staffers at a camp we have certain jobs that we are required to do and needs that have to be met. Outside of that, it is really up to the students to determine how much they are going to take from camp. All week long our students exceeded expectations by going out of their way to build relationships with campers. They spent their free time playing frisbee or singing in the choir when they could have been sleeping. They sat with other churches during meals instead of just the staff, and they put all their effort and energy into their games at recreation. It was awesome to watch them serve. Thanks guys!

Project 28 - part 2

I know you have heard stories about troubled children. Those without basic needs met. Children who have limited resources, broken families, violent communities and little knowlege of God. Many times we send missionaries to foreign countries to work with children whose needs seem far greater than our own. I know I have personally felt satified when I have supported and prayed for those "noble saints" who go overseas to share the gospel with deeply disadvantaged children. This week the 7th grade girls had the opportunity to see, first hand, children with challenges like those described above. The only difference is that those children were right here in Alabaster!!

A wonderful Christian lady, Cindy Hawkins, oversees the Kids First Awareness Center in Alabaster. Through her center children of all ages are provided a safe environment to learn many basic life skills and hear the gospel. Lacy, Whitney, Holly and our 7th grade girls had the privilege of delivering fun, food, fellowship and the gospel for 4 consecutive days this week. It was truly an amazing experience for everyone! By the last day, relationships were developed and the gospel was shared!

So, what will be different? This was one of the most deeply spiritual experiences I've had in a long time. The reality of our local mission field is humbling to say the least. I presumed everyone in Alabaster knew something about church, or something about God. We were struck with the reality that MANY have NO knowlege at all! We kept telling our students " It's NOT about you!" After a week in Alabaster's toughest neighborhood I have learned again "It's not about me!"
Hopefully, prayfully and seeking God's leading we will add to this blog again that we have returned to the center to complete the work that God has begun!

Here is a mid-way update on project 28:

This week the 7th grade girls LIFE group emarked on what has turned out to be a really cool project. We are spending each afternoon this week (mon. thru thurs.) at Kids First Awareness Center in Alabaster where we are doing a VBS-like class each day. When we arrived yesterday we had no idea what to expect and we did not know any of the kids. But, after wrapping up today there were smiles all around as the kids came out to say goodbye to us.

It has been really cool to be able to share God's word with these children, many of whom might have never heard any Bible stories and have little knowledge of God. The group of girls who've been helping out with the project have already been able to build relationships with the kids. We are looking forward to tomorrow when we get to share the gospel with them and then thursday when we have a pizza party!

American Red Cross Blood Drive

A few months ago Kenneth Shaw and a team of students went to work promoting a blood drive that was to be held on an upcoming Sunday morning at Westwood. When that Sunday arrived, however, they found out that the "blood-mobile" was broken and couldn't come. So, Mr. Kenneth and the team of students geared up for a second round of promotion for a second attempt at a blood drive. This time things went much more smoothly as the American Red Cross blood-mobile arrived at Westwood yesterday morning with a goal of 30 pints to be donated. Thanks to all the Westwood church family who donated - it was a successful day! The goal was met with exactly 30 pints of blood donated.

Project 26 - Staffing SL for Kids

On Wednesday, June 25th I got a call from Stuart Chapman, Camp Director for Student Life for Kids, and he was in a desperate situation. The camp of 1100 kids that they were scheduled to run at Shocco Springs the next week had no Student Staffers, and Stuart asked if we could help.

We agreed and started calling everyone we could think of or had numbers for, and we came up with a crew of 16 in about a 24 hour period: Matt Treherne, Josh Harris, Blake Strevel, Matt Bess, Ryan Horton, Hayden Frank, Lauren Ginn, Mallorie Gray, Jenna Morris, Liz Hinrickson, Dianna Tingle, Sarah Box, Ellen Anne Bentley, Courtney Jordan, and Lacy Allen.

As Student Staffers, we help load in and load out all the equipment that goes into a Student Life production...and it's a lot! We assist in the production of the worship services by running cameras, helping backstage, selling merchandise, and welcoming campers. And, we also run the games on the recreation fields. There was an outdoor field and a water field. Needless to say, one was a little messier than the other!

I have staffed numerous camps, and I must say that Westwood's crew did a terrific job. I received tons of complements on our students and their contribution to the camp experience of 1100 3rd through 6th graders. We also had a great time hanging out with each other, but I will spare you all the lame inside jokes that have arisen from last week.

Thank you to a great crew coming together at literally the last second to help 1100 kids have a great camp experience!

We are leaving tomorrow morning at 9:00 to go to Orange Beach, AL for Student Life Camp. Camp is an awesome time because we get unplug from our everyday lives for a week and really connect with God and seek Him.

Please be in prayer for the students and our whole group while we are gone...

-pray that students would CONNECT with God this week.
-pray for the family group leaders as they guide their groups through discussion about God's word.
-pray that students would GROW with other believers in family group time and just being together.
-pray that lives would be changed.

Project 25 - VBS 2008

It was an amazing sight this week to walk into the worship center and see over 700 kids and their crew leaders gathered together for a week of learning about Jesus through an awesome week at VBS.

This year I had the priviledge of coordinating the 150+ student volunteers. It was really cool to see students serving as crew leaders as well as helping with crafts, snack, drama, video, preschool and all the other aspects that are important to make vbs possible.

Throughout the week I had several of our adult helpers come to me with compliments on what a great job their student helpers were doing... so I just wanted to pass those compliments along. Thanks to all the students who volunteered, you did a great job! Thanks for showing up on time, being where you were supposed to, turning in your nametags :) and working so hard to help these kids learn more about God.

On Monday of this week a group of 16 students and adults went back out to continue the work on Mrs. Williams' house. The day got off to a great start as the metal drop box outside the church office drilled Oliver in the face on the way to morning prayer with the church staff. (Oliver tried to pretend this didn't happen) Then we piled into the cars and headed to Mrs. Williams'. It was pretty hot outside, but thanks to Andrew, Oliver and Will leading us in a variety of tunes, we were able to forget about the heat. Throughout the day Katie and Gene' also helped provide some comic relief. Overall everyone worked really hard and it was a productive day. We were able to finish scraping and priming the second side of the house. Here are some pictures...

8th Grade Life Group Project – Alabaster Street Clean-up

On Saturday May 30th, the 8th grade girls and guys participated in an Alabaster street clean-up. The group joined with Freewill Missionary Baptist Church, Christ Church, and the city of Alabaster to clean up garbage from the streets in several low income neighborhoods around the Shelby County Alternative School.

It was hot, dirty, and smelly work but we were all blessed to be a part of the team. Our group, led by Mrs. Kim Frank and her husband Larry, greeted each person we saw in the neighborhood, as well as those that drove by with a friendly hello, a smile, and the girls all said “have a great day”.

We picked up everything from cans, bottles, food containers, paper, old tires, and even some underwear (thanks Justin!). It was amazing how different the streets looked after we were finished.

After the trash clean-up, we joined the other teams at Christ Church and they had prepared hamburgers and hotdogs for everyone. They were so thankful for our help that they called us their special guests and asked us to get our food first. We all ate and had great fellowship before returning to Area 51. --Mr. Danny Wash
